Endocrine Disruptors: Is Your Shampoo Gaslighting Your Hormones?
You’ve probably seen this phrase floating around lately “endocrine disruptors”.
Sounds fancy, maybe even a bit fear mongery, right? Another health buzzword trying to convince you to buy “clean” products that cost half your rent.
But here’s the thing: it’s not just wellness marketing. It actually means something.
Your endocrine system is basically your hormone headquarters. It manages everything from your mood and metabolism to sleep, stress, and even how clear your skin is (for more hormone info, check my last article!).
So when we talk about endocrine disruptors, we’re talking about chemicals that confuse your hormones, block their signals, or crank up the wrong ones at the wrong time. Think of it like your hormones are hosting a dinner party, everything’s flowing beautifully, then an uninvited guest shows up, double-dips the hummus, and starts changing the playlist. Total chaos.
Now, our bodies are suuuppper delicate (like the flowers that we are) and honestly, anything can knock us out of whack.
Between skincare, perfume, cleaning products, takeaway cups, and tap water, we’re constantly bombarded with tiny chemicals that quietly mess with our balance.
It’s no wonder our poor bodies are working overtime trying to keep up, adjust, and detox from it all.
For example, did you know that most tap water contains a chemical called fluoride?
It was added decades ago to help prevent tooth decay, which made sense at the time, but fluoride is actually a man-made chemical compound and not something our bodies naturally evolved to process in large amounts.
Fluoride works on teeth topically (like in toothpaste), but when we drink it every day through water, it’s a whole different story. The body doesn’t really know what to do with the extra fluoride, so it can build up in tissues like the thyroid and bones. Over time, too much of it may start to interfere with natural hormone signals, especially the ones that control your metabolism and energy.
Now, I’m not saying panic and never drink water again! But it’s worth being aware. Even small things like using a water filter or drinking bottled mineral water can take the pressure off your detox pathways and give your body one less thing to fight against.
Because when it comes to hormone health, every little reduction in chemical exposure counts. Your body is already doing a full-time job keeping you balanced.
Being truthful, in todays age its virtually impossible to eradicate all endocrine disruptors (unless you live on a remote island and only eat home grown food and bathe in fresh springs- ugh the dream) but what we can do is be aware, and try to minimise where possible.
And that’s just fluoride, one of the quiet overachievers in the “how did that get in my body?” category.
The good news? Most of the big offenders are way easier to dodge once you know their names.
🧴 The Sneaky Hormone Hijackers Hiding in Your Home
A general rule of thumb?
If you can’t pronounce it, don’t ingest it.
And yes, that includes your skin.
Fun fact: your skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs what you put on it. So while that dreamy-smelling lotion might make you feel all soft and divine, your liver might be sitting there like,
Girl… I’m stuck in traffic with 40 other toxins, can we not add glitter body oil to the mix right now?
Smelling sweet is cute, but oestrogen dominance? Not so much.
Here are the biggest culprits and where they’re hiding 👇
Phthalates
💡 Say it like: “tha-lates”
Found in: perfumes, air fresheners, scented candles, hair spray, nail polish, and even food packaging.
Why it matters: They mimic oestrogen and mess with your reproductive hormones.
You’ll usually find them hiding under the word “fragrance” or “parfum” on ingredient lists…sneaky.
⚠️ Common culprits: Victoria’s Secret body sprays, Bath & Body Works, Yankee candles, and basically any air freshener.
🌸 Try instead:
- Essential oil diffusers or soy/beeswax candles.
- Natural perfumes from Lush
Parabens
Found in: moisturisers, shampoos, body lotions, and makeup.
Why it matters: Parabens act like weak oestrogen, disrupting your cycle, mood, and even fertility.
Look for ingredients ending in –paraben (like methylparaben or propylparaben).
⚠️Common culprits: Tresemmé, Dove, Nivea body lotions, and older makeup formulas.
🌸 Try instead:
- Haircare from ‘Faith in Nature’, pure Almond oil for skin moisturiser
BPA & BPS (Bisphenols)
Found in: plastic bottles, food containers, plastic chopping boards and, store receipts.
Why it matters: These chemicals mimic oestrogen and interfere with thyroid function.
If your old Tupperware looks scratched or cloudy, it’s time to let it go.
And yes, that shiny supermarket receipt can mess with your hormones too- always say no (helps the environment too!)
⚠️Common culprits: Disposable water bottles, takeaway containers, and some canned foods.
🌸 Try instead:
Glass jars, stainless steel bottles, or BPA-free plastics, wooden chopping boards, Glass tupperwears
Avoid microwaving plastic (even the “microwave-safe” ones), just no.
PFAS — “Forever Chemicals”
Found in: non-stick pans, waterproof makeup, fast-food wrappers, and stain-resistant fabrics.
Why it matters: These build up in the body and affect your thyroid, fertility, and metabolism.
You’ll see them on labels that say “non-stick”, “long-wear”, or “waterproof”.
⚠️Common culprits: Teflon cookware, McDonald’s wrappers, Maybelline Super Stay foundation, Polyester fabrics.
🌸 Try instead:
- Cook with cast iron, ceramic, or stainless steel.
Final Thoughts
Before you throw out half your bathroom cabinet, take a breath. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s awareness.
Your body is already incredible at detoxing, it just needs you to stop flooding the gates.
Start with what you use every day, your shampoo, candles, and food containers then build from there,
Your body is amazing and it will do the rest!
